Institutional Household Background: Two women, Inger and Marie, who are 45 and 47 years old respectively have both worked for 25 years at the department of food and nutrition at the University Hospital in Örebro and still do. Inger has a 2-year upper secondary school degree in Administration, a 27- year old basic course in Institutional Household and four shorter courses in the same field, of which the most extensive was for two weeks. Marie has a 2-year general upper secondary school degree, a discontinued study program in Information and Communication from university and two shorter courses in Institutional Household. Goal: They both want their skills in Institutional Household documented as Inger is considering applying for other jobs and as Marie want to move on to further education within the subject. Vocational Competence How: The process begins with a mapping (discussions, self-evaluation, collection of grades and certificates, study plan, etc.) together with a study and vocational counsellor at CityAkademin. Then a more investigating conversation takes place with two vocational studies teachers from an upper secondary school specialising in hotel and restaurant work. Inger and Marie get to carry out practical tasks as well as written home assignments. Where: The validation takes place both in their work place and in a study environment. Two vocational studies teachers are responsible for the validation. Inger and Marie visit the upper secondary school at three different occasions and the teachers go to their work place twice. When: During the validation period they both work as usual, but get time off to visit the teachers at the upper secondary school. Assignments that are part of the validation process should be taken care of in their spare time. It takes three weeks from the first conversation with the teachers until the documentation is done. Documentation: They get grades in five national character courses within the hotel and restaurant study program. Follow-up: They are both still at their old work place.
