Beskrivning / Case description: | Computer/IT Courses
Background: Susanne is 41 years old, unemployed and has on her own initiative gained
competence in computer technology and computer usage. During a visit at CityAkademin she
gets information about validations.
Goal: She is not interested in studying, but she wants to get a certificate of her competence as
she would like to apply for jobs where she can use her computer skills.
Vocational Competence
How: Susanne and a study and vocational counsellor map her skills. This material is handed
over to an upper secondary school teacher in the subjects in question. The teacher interviews
Susanne thoroughly and gives her home assignments and evaluates her home page.
Where: Susanne visits the teacher at her work place.
When: The validation is completed after a month.
Documentation: Susanne gets grades in three national upper secondary school courses; Web
Design, Operating Systems and Desktop.
Follow-up: Susanne is now able to present a wider competence and after a couple of months
she gets involved in a project where she can use her computer skills.
Nursing/Preschool
Background: Anna came to Sweden from El Salvador. She is 41 years old, has a preschool
teacher training and work experience within the field from her home country, but she lacks all
the documentation. In Sweden she studies e.g. Swedish, English and Social Sciences in adult
education programs. Through the job centre she gets the opportunity to practise at a
preschool.
Goal: That she will get a job within the field in which she has competence and interest.
Vocational Competence
How: The validation begins with a mapping where Anna writes down her knowledge and
experience, collects certificates and grades and goes through the content in the nursing
training program. Then a study plan is established together with a study and vocational
counsellor at CityAkademin. All the material is handed over to a vocational studies teacher in
the adult education program who she later meets for a more thorough interview. Anna gets
home assignments and meets the teacher once a month for presentations and discussions. The
teacher also visits the work placement and meets Anna’s supervisor.
Where: The validation takes place at both the work placement, where Anna has a supervisor,
and at CityAkademin, where she meets the vocational studies teacher who is responsible for
the validation.
When: Due to the teacher’s and the supervisor’s holidays and to the fact that Anna got a fulltime
temporary position, the validation period was extended. It was completed after 6 months.
Documentation: Anna gets at least an average grade in the six courses included in the
nursing training program.
Follow-up: After the validation Anna has regularly had a job within child care and she
believes her future looks bright.
